RetroBlasting saves a surviving childhood Star Wars X-Wing from the junk pile!
In this video series we use a number of methods to restore this badly aged toy, including Retr0brite or Retrobrite in Part 2, a chemical solution that does work to diminish yellowing, though we do not know the long-term effects it may have on plastic. Please use at your own risk.
RETROBRITE RECIPE
- 1 pint (2 cups) Hydrogen peroxide 40 vol (clear liquid, not creme)
- 2 heaping Tablespoons Xanthan Gum
- 1 level teaspoon Glycerine
- 1/4 teaspoon OxyClean (mixed into 1 teaspoon hot water)
Combine Hydrogen Peroxide and Xanthan gum in blender and mix for 5 sec. Add glycerine. Mix 5 seconds. Rest mixture for 1-5 min. Mix again for 5 sec. This base can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container. When you are ready to use, stir or mix in the OxyClean. This activates the solution, thus it must be used immediately. Apply to plastic surface you want to whiten, masking off any areas you don't want to affect. Place under a UV light and check every few hours. The process can take anywhere from 2-12 hours.
